Learn with Optima

Optima Driver Training has been built from a passion for driving and for road safety at the highest level. Our instructors, registered by the Driving Standards Agency, all hold advanced driving qualifications, and are trained by the best so they can give you the best. Whether you are learning, developing or advancing.

The Car
To get you on your way, Optima uses the new Renault Clio Dynamique. With an excellent 1.5 dci engine, power steering and air conditioning, the Clio is a comfortable car, which is easy to control and manouvre. It has five star Euro NCAP rating, ABS, seatbelt pretensioners and airbags, making the Clio one of the safest cars available today, and giving you confidence on the road. With alloys, colour-coded bumpers and driving fog lights it is good to look at too.

The Provisional Licence
You need to be 17 before you can start learning to drive and you must have a valid provisional licence before you take your first driving lesson. To get a provisional licence you need to complete a D1 form from the post office and send it to the DVLA (DVLNI in Northern Ireland) with your passport or birth certificate, and a passport-sized photo. You can also apply online at www.DVLA.gov.uk.

You can apply for a provisional licence up to three months before your 17th birthday so why not have your first lesson with Optima on your big day?

The Lessons
We will estimate how many lessons you are likely to need after your first lesson. The Driving Standards Agency statistics show that the current average is 45 hours, with 22 hours of private practice. We would always advise two hour lessons, giving a more indepth lesson each time and very likely to decrease the amount of time it takes to get your driving freedom!

The syllabus you follow when you learn to drive is set out by the Driving Standards Agency. Your instructor will use a personal driving development chart to map and track your development; it can also act as a useful tool when you are practising privately.

During your lessons, your instructor will score each section of the syllabus on the development chart. You'll score 1 – when a topic is introduced, to 5 – when you can do each task independently.
